Back to School Trends: 2011

Growing up, getting new clothing was the only reason I smiled about going back to school.  Now that I am a grown up (aka broke), my favorite part of school is watching what people wear.  Just kidding.  That's not my favorite part.  Learning is.  But, people watching is definitely fun.

So far, I've noticed the following "Back to School" trends:

Feather Extensions
I'm not sure how I feel about feather extensions.  Sometimes I think they look really great, and other times I think they look like trash is stuck in your hair.  My verdict?  Choose feathers that are similar to your hair color for a subtle, funky twist on an outrageously popular trend.

White Stitch Jeans
I'm not sure I'm totally on board with this look.  It's a little "home girl" for my liking.  However, if you want Jon Gosslin to be the baby daddy of your sextuplets, these jeans are definitely a buy.

Gladiator Sandals
Gladiator sandals are a wonderful alternative to flip flops, and can be easily dressed up or down.

Animal Print
I've been on the animal print band wagon for a couple of years now, and I love it in moderation.  But, my biggest 'animal print pet peeve' is wearing a neon animal print.  I've been guilty of this in the past,
and I know it can be tempting, but please just say "no."  Your future self will thank me.
Floral accents
I love floral skirts and tops, and think they add a feminine touch to an everyday look.  But, word to the wise:  be careful that you never choose a floral print that could potentially look good on a couch.  I've seen this sort of thing go down on campus, and it is not a pretty thing.

Sheer Lace
I've seen this trend everywhere this semester.  I like it, too.  But only if you wear something under it.  Please don't just wear this over your bra and call it a day.  It's just no good.

What do you guys think?  What are things like where you live?

Also.  Shout out to Sam and Laura for their input!

I am still surprised that the gladiator style is still around. I really thought it would last one season and it is what on the fourth year or something. Crazy.
I'm not a big animal print gal so I say no to that. But thats just me, I do love a good pretty floral print in moderation. As a top or as a skirt.

haha "don't wear it over your bra and call it a day" seriously. but if you do, make it a cute bra. lol I saw a girl rocking that look with the mosty dingy disgusting bra i've ever seeeen.

ahahaha i totally a) have feathers in my hair, b) looked down and i'm wearing gladiator sandals, and c) wish i had a lace shirt...however, i 1) think white-stitching jeans belong either in the ghetto OR on moms who read twilight and shop at anthropologie w/ their tweenie daughters, and 2) don't own anything in neon animal-print. And to answer your SUU questions, i was there from 2005-2008...lived in eccles, windsor & then a crappy little house just south of the multipurpose lawn. CC will probably always own about half of my heart, it's true!! i'm actually coming up for homecoming in a couple weeks. HOLLA!!!

Ah, I must say I LOVE your verdict on the feather extensions - it's true - seems like it's the go-to trend this year.

I'm not in school now but I have seen people wearing a ton of lace and off-the-shoulder tops/dresses, too!

Nice post :) :)

oh my gosh my biggest pet peeve is when people just wear a bra under a lace shirt!! there's no longer a point in your shirt because everyone's looking at your bra.

Haha I love most of those trends! I am kind of over the white stitching though! I agree about the feathers :) And I gave you a blog award so come check it out :) You deserved it! I really enjoy your blog even though I don't comment as much as I'd like, I've been super busy the past few weeks!!! Have a good day girl!

haha you want mine?
Feather extensions are no good.
I have white stitcehd jeans, but they're a lot more subtle than the ones in that pictures, and I've had them for awhile. Those particular ones I don't like.
Gladiators? With a heel like in number 1? probably not. #5 is too much. the others would be good i think.
I like animal print. I have a blue and white cheetah print sweater that you can't pay me to get rid of. But i guess it's not neon. Still count?
LOVE floral accents. YES, even if it looks like a couch! That's even better actually :)
Lace: agreed!
Haha, I love your random posts!

Fashion watching is one of my favorite parts of school too! And you hit the nail on the head with this one! "However, if you want Jon Gosslin to be the baby daddy of your sextuplets, these jeans are definitely a buy." Hahaha- cracked me up for minutes on end, no joke!! And, as a little tip from me to you, my alternative to feather extensions are feather earrings. You don't have to have them in all the time and when your hair is down, they create a similar look. GREAT POST (as always).

Things are pretty similar where I'm at. Feather extensions WERE HUGE at my school. And I totally agree on your animal print philosophy :)

I think I really like the feather in your hair trend when it is subtle. I love sheer lace.

It is not that new of a trend, but I am seeing Tom's on everyone's feet out here.
