The Hunger Games Debate.

A few days back, someone asked me if I was excited for the Hunger Games movie to come out.  I said, "Eh . . . Not really.  I haven't read the books."  Who(m)ever I was talking with was pretty suprised.  At that moment, I was no longer a human.  I was an alien who couldn't possibly be functioning normally in everyday society.

You guys, I'm not even an alien.  I'm just a girl who hasn't read for fun in a very long time.

I have a hard time getting behind things that people tons of people are obsessed with.  For instance, I have never worn a pair of large frame hipster glasses.  I don't have a smart phone.  I don't listen to Rihanna.  And, I have never made cake balls.  I don't think any of these things are bad, I just am not interested. I like having my own secret fascinations.  Except for Pinterest.  I jumped on that bandwagon, and never looked back.

Anyway.  What I'm trying to determine is this:

Should I read the friggin' Hunger Games and get everyone off my back about it?
Or, should I just wait for the movie to come out?

If you've read the book, lemme know what you think.  Because otherwise I'm just going to stick with my Nancy Drew.

Haven't read the books, but Mary Anne loved them. I have a dumb phone too. I have never read Nancy Drew either!! Where have I been?

I haven't read the books either (nor have I made cake balls, or listened to Rhianna). : ) I have a friend who wants me to read the books so bad, but I don't read books about vampires or apocalypses. So I just can't bring myself to do it.

Stick with Nancy Drew. I stick with mysteries too! : )

I really enjoyed The Hunger Games. You should definitely give it a try. :) However, Nancy Drew is pretty tempting...:)

I definitely agree with not jumping on the bandwagon.

I had a smart phone but decided non smart phones were cooler so now I'm old school again. I've never made cake balls. I've never worn over sized frames - though they would probably look better on me than normal frames just because I despise what I look like in glasses. I don't listen to Rihanna or Lady Gaga or Katy Perry. I'm still not sure I'm ready for colored skinnies. I don't like anything that is knit. I don't like belts, wedges or bright colored tights in the slightest bit. I stil iron clothes - even t-shirts. And I didn't want to read the Hunger Games.

Until I saw the trailer for it. So, I did and I loved them. It's an edge of your seat kind of series. I rated it in my top favorites which is a HUGE deal for me. They are cuss-free and sex-free but not fluffy to the extent of boring. Anyway, you still might not like them because everyone is definitely entitled to their own opinion. I wasn't a fan of The Hobbit which is a classic.

So. There is my long spill. Maybe you didn't fall asleep in the process of reading. Haha.

Omg, thank you! I so agree with this. I don't watch Glee, not into Twilight, didn't read the Hunger Games and never wore Uggs. Everything that's "in" is so overrated and just makes me not want to like it before giving it a chance. Not to be "different" or too "cool" for it but just because it annoys me how people act like you're nuts for not being obsessed with a certain trend.

I love Nancy Drew! And I read the book. They were good, but disturbing (I am probably one of the few people that think this, but oh well). The books are an interesting read though!

I meant to say books* =)

I agree with Carlie - they are an interesting read, but I think I would have been content just seeing the movie too. I loved the first book - but the other two fell flat for me.

The movie trailer gave me the urge to read them - since it is full of emotional footage. The first book lived up to my expectations.

I liked the hunger games books. The whole love triangle thing was a bit overplayed but I still really think they are worth checking out bc I doubt the movies will be able to bring the awesome first person narration justice

umm you need to read the books!!!! i love love it!!! :)

I hate conforming too, but I read these way before they were so popular and they are good. Like edge of your seat good. READ THEM. I have a feeling the movie will ruin them.

You should read The Hunger Games if the story sounds interesting to you. The story is AMAZING but don't read them because everyone is telling you to. With that being said, you totally need to read them

I read them. They are interesting... well at least the first one was but you know how that goes. You have to know how it ends. I think the movie will ruin them. In someways it is like the harry potter bandwagon. You are on it and like it but off it you are lost. You choice, that is my input on it though.

I don't listen to Rhianna either. And I wished I'd never done the smart phone thing. I could never go back but I hate paying the bill, haha.
You should read the books. You really would enjoy them. But if you don't, DEFINITELY see the movie! It's something you AND Mista T will enjoy :)

Oh girl.... I know how you feel. I finally broke down and ordered the first book through inter-library loan, because someone actually said I live under a rock, and what was wrong with me anyways? So yea, I ordered it. I'll read it, eventually. But it's because I like to read and I'll read pretty much anything I can get my hands on.

I'm pretty sure I have hipster glasses. And I have a 'smart phone' which was a semi-dumb move. And I kind of love Rhianna. But cake balls, whateves. I want cake. Not a little bite of cake on a stick. :)

The books are GREAT! If you want to see the movie, read the book first! I am a big believer in that! They are an easy read and one of those books you can't put down! I have read them over 5 times...kinda my "go to" read! But, I'm a book worm!

I haven't read them, for the same reason. I know what you mean- I worked at the St. George city library while the 'Work and the Glory' craze was going on- I got so irritated with people going crazy to get the next one and acting like I was going to outer darkness for not reading them that I vowed never to read them. And I never have.

Anyway. I'm with ya.

K. I have never made cake balls. I never read Harry Potter. I actually started the first book in 5th grade because the teacher "made" us and I protested and told her the book went against my beliefs and asked if I could read something else. True story. Half of the reason I did that was probably because of how much I hated that everyone loved them so much. Half was that I just really wasnt into them. Same with the towers/hobbit books. Still haven't seen the movies. You get my point. I read the hunger games books before they were big like...3 years ago...as they were coming out and I LOVED THEM!!!!! Seriously....they are so good. You have to do it. Do it. Read it, then see the movie. It's not even that long. I think it took me like 3 days which is a record for me. I'm not much of a reader.

Amen chica! I hate jumping on a band wagon just because everyone is doing it. I really don't understand the thrifting/hipster thing...
Anywho, I did read the Hunger Games - the first 2 were pretty good. Read them super fast. The third? I lost interest.. I still have a bookmark somewhere in it. Generally though I like reading books before I'll see the movie since the book tends to always be better.
Nancy Drew? HOLLA! I freaking love those books! My mom had a ton back when she was little so they smelled amazing - I'd read like 3 in a day.

they are a quick read, I say read them.

I read them before they got HUGE, otherwise I probably wouldn't have read them. I flat out refuse to read Harry Potter or Twilight though.

But they are good books, the last one took me a while to get through.. because I would only read late at night..

I know the noncomformist feeling. Sometimes things are popular because they are awesome! Such an example is the hunger games. I loved the books! I'd reccommend them, but no pressure :)

Kndbbdjk said...

I will not write a novel, but seriously read the books. You will love them :)

Oh my goodness. I CAN RELATE TO THIS!!! I am the exact same way! If something gets all hyped up and everyone is flipping out about it, I'm instantly turned off. So...yeah...I haven't read them either. Same goes for Twilight. However, I did ride the Hogwarts Express all the way from the Sorcerer's Stone to Harry & Ginny tying the knot.

I read those books back before everyone got all hyped up on them. They are really good. I didn't like the ending of the story in the third book but the rest of them were pretty awesome! I too also have a feeling that the movies are going to ruin the books but we'll wait and see.

ok, are we the same person? because I had this inner struggle myself about reading the Hunger Games. I'm the Same exact way, I don't like getting into something just cause everyone else is. But I decided to give Hunger Games a try cause I got a Barnes and Noble giftcard anyway.. I'm about a quarter/half the way thru and it's ok so far. Hasn't blown me out of the water but it's an interesting idea. ALso, I grew up on Nancy Drew, she is my hero. I have a goal to read every single one! LOVE nancy drew mysteries. Like I said: hello, twin :)

joe and i enjoyed the books.
i liked the first one the most.
the other ones didn't seem to be as good, but i guess you kinda have to read them, i mean, as to not lack the knowledge of how it all ends.

i have big rimmed glasses.
maybe i'm lame.

"The Hunger Games" is a good read. But do not allow anyone to make you feel guilty about NOT reading it.

(and what are cake balls?!?)

Arielle-HumblePieVintage said...

hahah I don't do any of those things either. Everyone keeps talking about The Hunger Games and I have no idea what its even about. I keep wondering if I should give in and read them too? Idk.

Margaret Atwood's "Year of the Flood" is the grown-up version of this same type of futuristic dystopia, human vs. human thing. It's no more difficult of a read, but you can still feel like an adult AND avoid "the bandwagon."

I share your rejection of the popular, but it's hard to know when to cave because the majority is actually on to something.

It took me SO long to jump on the Hunger Games, but once I started, I read all 3 in a week, like read while cooking dinner with a toddler hanging on my knees and a baby in hand. It was crazy. I say go for it :)

Honestly they're great books but if reading for fun isn't your thing I don't know why you'd bother! Do what makes you happy :)
